Carbohydrates from food are divided in two types: complex and simple.<\/span><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complex carbohydrates are made up of many simple sugar molecules that are attached together and called polysaccharides. When you consume them, they are broken down into glucose with a slow release of energy<\/span><b style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are<\/span><b> starch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> fiber <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found in oatmeal, brown rice, whole-grain bread, popcorn, whole-grain vermicelli, sweet potatoes, legumes, and vegetables.<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple carbohydrates, commonly called <\/span><b>sugar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are fast-acting and turn into energy as soon as they are consumed. All other carbohydrates (including other sugars) are converted into glucose during the digestion of food. Glucose is naturally found in some fruits and vegetables and the nectar or sap of plants.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fructose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 is also known as fruit sugar, and is the main sugar found in fruits, berries, honey, root vegetables, and some grains. <\/span>Our bodies convert fructose to glucose in the liver to use it for energy.\u00a0<\/li><li><b>Galactose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 this monosaccharide is mostly found in milk and yogurt.
